SHLOYME-LEYB
MOSHKOVITSH (1888-late May 1944)
He was born in Munkatsh
(Hung. Munkács), Carpato-Ruthenian area of the
former Austro-Hungarian empire. He
attended religious elementary school and yeshivas. He was later a merchant and a traveling businessman. He published articles, reportage pieces, and
impressions in: Munkatsher tsaytung
(Munkács newspaper) (1923-1926); Munkatsher
humorist (Munkács humorist) (1924-1927); Yudishe shtime (Jewish voice) (1929-1930); and Marmoresher bleter (Marmației leaves) and Oyfgang (Arise)—in Sighet-Marmației; among others. In book form: A dor vos geyt unter (A generation goes under), “reportage pieces, impressions,
and the character of the important Jewish communities of Munkács and
Carpato-Ruthenia) (Munkacs, 1937), 72 pp.
“This volume—the first Yiddish book in Carpato-Ruthenia—…possesses a
treasure house of the distinctive vernacular language of Carpato-Ruthenian
Jewry, and Moshkovitsh may be marked as the Mendele of his Munkács,” according
to Sh. Y. Dorfzon. Since WWII there has
no further information about him.
