YUDE-LEYB-GERSHON KAHANOVITS (KAHANOVICH)

YUDE-LEYB-GERSHON KAHANOVITS (KAHANOVICH) (September 8, 1879-August 3, 1934)
            He was born in a village in Homel (Gomel) district, Byelorussia.  He studied under his father, later with private tutors in Horbil (Gorval׳), Minsk district, where he joined the Zionist movement.  He took part in the Helsinki Zionist Conference.  In 1923 he moved to the land of Israel.  He was a cofounder of the Israeli cooperative movement.  He published articles in: Hamelits (The advocate), Hazman (The times), Had hazman (Echo of the times), Der fraynd (The friend) in St. Petersburg-Warsaw, Petrograder togblat (Petrograd daily newspaper), and Haarets (The land) in Tel Aviv, among others.  He was editor of the monthly journal Kooperatsya (Cooperatiation) and of Luaḥ hakoopertivi (Calendar of the cooperative) in Tel Aviv.  He died in Tsfat (Sefad).  After his death his book Mehomel ad tel aviv, zikhronot vedemuyot (From Homel to Tel Aviv, memoirs and images) (Tel Aviv, 1952), 167 pp. appeared; in it is included a portion of his writings and appreciations of him.
