SHMUEL-TSVI VAYS

SHMUEL-TSVI VAYS (December 25, 1885-May 20, 1949)

            He was born in Greyding, near Lemberg, Galicia, to a father who was a religious judge.  He studied in religious primary school and synagogue study hall, as well as with private tutors.  He was a member of Vaad Hapoel (Zionist General Council) of the Mizrachi in Galicia.  From 1935 he was living in Israel.  He began publishing stories of Jewish village life in Galicia in the Hebrew weekly newspaper Hamitspe (The watchtower) in Cracow (1922), later writing as well in Yiddish for Lemberger togblat (Lemberg daily newspaper) and other Yiddish weeklies in Galicia.  He was the author of Peri levanon (Fruit of Lebanon), published by Mosad Harav Kook (Jerusalem, 1955), 208 pp.  He died in Jerusalem.
