MEYER BEN SHLOYME HER

MEYER BEN SHLOYME HER
He hailed from Lithuania.  He translated from Hebrew and Aramaic into Judeo-German nineteenth sections of Reshit ḥokhma (Beginning of wisdom) and published them under the title Or oylem di likht fun der velt (The light of the earth) (Vilna, 1878), 40 pp.: “This religious text has been translated by me from the language of holiness into stylized archaic Yiddish.  I have extracted from the entire Shas [Mishna] all the aphorisms which begin with language (to the people), nineteen sections that speak of service, and etiquette and proper behavior, as a man should conduct himself in the world, and when he will fulfill that which is written here, he can be confident that he will enter the world to come, amen.”  He also adapted and translated Di mayse shovakh (Story of the dovecote), “a wondrous tale taken from Yalkut reuveni zyʺa [may its virtue stand us in good stead].”
