ZUSYE (ZIGMUND) HABER

ZUSYE (ZIGMUND) HABER (September 28, 1887-1938)
            He was born in Kolomaye (Kolomyya), Galicia.  In 1906 he founded in the city of his birth the weekly newspaper Yudishe folks-politik (Jewish people’s politics) which was published until 1912; he was also co-editor (with Meyer Hibner) of the biweekly Der tog (The day) in Cracow, Yudishe ilustrirte tsaytung (Jewish illustrated newspaper), and the monthly Beys yisroel (House of Israel).  He also published in Togblat (Daily newspaper) in Lemberg, Idishe zhurnal (Jewish journal) in London, and Haynt (Today) in Warsaw.  Until 1921 he was correspondent for the Forverts (Forward) in New York, later for Di tsayt (The times) in Vilna, Handels-tsaytung (Business newspaper) in Warsaw, and others.  In 1911 the publisher “Familyen-blat” (Family newspaper) brought out Shulamis oder beys yerusholaim (Shulamit, or the house of Jerusalem), “adapted by Z. Haber,” 31 pp.  During the period of WWI, he settled in Vienna, and saw to it that the government acknowledge Yiddish as a language that held all the appropriate rights in Austria.  He translated Hebrew and Yiddish into German.  He died in Vienna.
