SHLOYME (SHLOMO) DREKSLER

SHLOYME (SHLOMO) DREKSLER (b. December 15, 1911)
            He was born in Jaslowicz, near Czortków, eastern Galicia.  He received a traditional education.  He studied in a Hebrew pedagogical institute in Lemberg and in the seminary of R. Tsvi-Perets Khayes (Zwi Perez Chajes) in Vienna.  From his youth until 1927, he was an active member of “Hashomer hatsair” (Youth guard).  From 1931 he was living in Palestine, where he was a member of the kibbutz “Givat ḥayim” (Hill of life) and of the Mapai party until it split.  He was later one of the founders of the “Jewish Unity” movement and a member of Mapam from 1948.  He was also a member of the editorial board of Al hamishmar (On guard).  He assumed positions of responsibility in Israel after statehood, among them with “Hakibuts hameuhad” (The united kibbutz) and Histadrut.  Over the years 1952-1953, he was living in the United States, where he co-edited the organ of the left Labor Zionists, Undzer veg (Our way).  In Yiddish he published articles in Morgn (Morning) in Lemberg and Dos vort (The word) in Warsaw.  He compiled a Yiddish anthology of Hebrew literature and translated Avigdor Hameiri’s Dos groyse mishegas (The great madness [original: Hashigaon hagadol]) from Hebrew into Yiddish.  In addition to Yiddish and Hebrew, he also wrote in German and translated from Hebrew and Yiddish literature.  Among his writings in Hebrew in book form: Givat ḥayim and Moshavot sotsialistiyot (Socialist settlements).  He was living in Israel.
