AVROM HOKHMAN

AVROM HOKHMAN (b. 1862)
            He was born in Russia.  As a child, he moved with his parents to the United States and there received a Jewish and secular education.  He was taken from his youth with the study of human character and later, until WWI, became famous on New York’s East Side as “Professor Hokhman.”  He was the author of several books on palmistry and astrology in Yiddish, German, Polish, and English, such as: Di soydes fun astrologye (The secrets of astrology) (New York, 1908), 80 pp.; and Der shlisl tsu der nevue (The key to prophecy), “in which is explained prophets, sleepwalkers, those who speak in their sleep, dreams, physiognomy, and palmistry” (New York, 1909), 80 pp.  He was also the author of Varfer (Pitcher) (New York, 1895), which appeared in several editions.
