YITSKHOK-LEYB GRINBERG

YITSKHOK-LEYB GRINBERG (1888-November 19, 1938)
He was born in Krasnistov (Kransystaw), Lublin region, Poland, into a poor laboring family.  He studied in a Talmud-Torah.  In 1913 he moved to Warsaw where he became a laborer.  From his youth, he was active in the Bund.  During WWI, he was the founder and chair of a trade union of Jewish health workers.  In 1924 he settled in Danzig and was active there in Jewish community life.  He was chairman of the Jewish socialist artisans union.  He founded the “Y. L. Peretz Cultural Association” and frequently gave public talks there.  He was the leader of virtually all actions concerning the Jewish school system and on behalf of Yiddish culture.  When the Nazis became active in Danzig, he suffered a variety of persecutions and for time lived underground.  From 1924 until his death, he served as the regular Danzig correspondent for the Bundist press in Poland, principally for Naye folkstsaytung (New people’s newspaper) in Warsaw.  He was murdered by the Nazis in Danzig.
