ALTER GOLD

ALTER GOLD (1894-September 17, 1957)
He was born in Shedlets (Siedlce), Poland.  He was orphaned at a young age and was raised by his grandfather, a ritual slaughterer.  He studied in religious elementary school and yeshiva.  In 1913 he emigrated to the United States and became a bookkeeper.  In 1915 he was one of the organizers of “Shedlets Relief.”  He served in the American army during WWI, and he fought on the French front.  After returning home, he was a co-founder of an organization to build a temple for music in Palestine, which was to be a monument to the fallen Jewish soldiers and legionnaires.  To that end, he published and edited (with A. Ben-Ir and S. Cohen) the monthly Der yidisher soldat (The Jewish soldier), of which number 6 appeared in 1922 in New York.  He also published articles and stories in Bney-tsien shtime (Voice of the sons of Zion) in New York.  He died in New York.
