MOTL BREYTMAN

MOTL BREYTMAN (1888-January 1962)

            He was born in Briceni, Bessarabia.  He was the uncle of the writer Tanye Fuks.  He graduated from a senior high school and practiced as a dentist in Briceni and Czernowitz.  He was a cofounder of the Jewish library in Briceni.  He composed a novel entitled Ven der mon hot geblit (When the poppy seed bloomed), vol. 1 (Czernowitz: Kultur, 1917), 77 pp.  A portion of it was published in Lodzher folksblat (Lodz people’s newspaper) and Nayer folksblat (New people’s newspaper) in Lodz (1924-1926).  He also published stories.  He contributed to such literary publications as: Erd un arbet (Land and labor) 8-9 (Bucharest, 1919); Unzer vort (Our word), a serial put out by Poale-tsiyon (Bucharest, 1922); Di vokh (The week) (Bucharest, 1931-1934); Oyfgang (Arise) (Sighetu Marmației, 1933-1935); and Ikuf-bleter (Pages from IKUF) (Czernowitz-Bucharest, 1936-1937), among others.  From early 1942 through the end of 1944, he was imprisoned in a Romanian camp.  In 1945 he returned to Czernowitz, and after 1947 no further information about him has been forthcoming.  He did die in Czernowitz.
