SHMUEL BENET

SHMUEL BENET (b. August 27, 1920)

He was born in Lodz and grew up in Radom.  He studied in religious elementary school, yeshiva, and a secular high school.  In 1936 he began publishing poetry and short articles in Radomer-keltser lebn (Life in Radom and Kielce) as well as in the local Polish newspaper.  In 1938 he moved to Warsaw.  Initially he studied at Tachkemoni, later at a state seminary for Jewish teachers.  In 1939 he emigrated to Australia.  For a period of five years he worked on the editorial board of Oystralyer yidishe nayes (Australian Jewish news) in Melbourne.  In 1944 he volunteered to serve in the Australian army.  He wrote correspondence pieces from the army for Di yidishe post (The Jewish post).  Over the years 1945-1950, he contributed to Keneder odler (Canada eagle) in Montreal.  He was a co-founder of the Radom Center in Melbourne and honorary secretary of the local YIVO branch.  He was a member of the Australian Jewish Historical Society.
