HINDE BERGNER (October 10, 1870-1942)
She was born in Radymno, Galicia, to Yoysef and Blume
Rozenblat; and she was the mother of the painter Moyshe Harari and the Yiddish
writers Melech Ravitch and Herts Bergner.
She graduated from public school, married early, and bore three
children. At the age of sixty-seven, she
began writing her family memoirs: In di lange vinternekht,
mishpokhe-zikhroynes fun a shtetl in galitsye, 1870-1900 (In the long
winter nights, family memoirs from a town in Galicia, 1870-1900), published by
her sons with a foreword by Melech Ravitch and Herts Bergner (Montreal,
1946). In her intimate family chronicle,
there are a great number of images from the way of life in Galicia at the end
of the nineteenth century. The book is
an important contribution to the artistic memoir literature. In 1939, when the Nazis entered the town of
Radymno, she took refuge on the Soviet side of western Ukraine. For a time she was in Rava-Ruska, Przemyśl, and (until 1942) in a small place known as
Przemyślany, near Lemberg. From August 1942, nothing further was heard
from her.
